In short, it is a tonal language. One word can have a number of meanings depending upon the tone being used when speaking. Let us take an example of the word "MAI". This word has a number of meanings depending on which tone it is being said. The meanings could be not, new, silk and wood. There are mainly five tones used in the Thai language and they are: low tone, mid tone, high tone, rising tone, and falling tone. |
