Methods of Learning

Learning a foreign language can be very interesting, stimulating and fun. On the other hand, it can be difficult, frustrating and boring as well. In order to achieve success, you will have to think deeply about which language you want to approach and what benefits it will provide you.

Your lifestyle, educational background, current resources in terms of time and money, and your personality should come into consideration when you are deciding which method of language learning you want to adopt. There are basically 3 main methods in which you can learn a foreign language: self-study at home by using books, CDs, DVDs and other learning materials; attend classes with a teacher and other students; and online courses using e-learning materials. Each one of these methods has some advantages and disadvantages.

If you are not able to attend regular classes during the day or in the evening because of other commitments or work, self-study probably is the best option for you. However, this method requires a lot of self-motivation and self-discipline. The biggest disadvantage though of this approach is that there will be no one to answer your questions. You will not be able to communicate and discuss your problems with some one else. The best way to overcome this issue is to make a list of your questions as they keep coming in your mind and get the help of a native or fluent speaker of that certain language on a regular basis. You can also have one-on-one tutoring to supplement your self-study.

Learning a foreign language in a classroom environment is probably the most popular solution. The regularity of lessons will definitely encourage you to attend and you will be able to ask questions on the spot. In most cases, the enthusiasm of the other students might also be helpful to you in making progress, although sometimes you can be held back by the other students.

Online learning of a foreign language is the newest and most innovative method. It is helpful to both the self-motivated students who are interested in learning alone and also the more gregarious students who prefer to attend a class but are not able to do so due to circumstances. The interactivity of online learning creates a lot of interest and fun. You will be frequently communicating with other students and asking them questions. Another plus point is that, in many cases, online language courses are cheaper than other courses and are sometimes absolutely free. They do, however, have some limitations - most concentrate on the basic level, so you will have to look for an alternative method of learning once you have gone through the beginners' stage.
